Ciclovía de Medellín

About

Medellín's Ciclovía closes main roads to motor traffic on Sundays and public holidays so people can cycle, skate, walk or jog on them. It is run by INDER, the sports and recreation institute of the Alcaldía de Medellín, and has operated since a city decree of 1 November 1984. INDER's published schedule lists five main daytime routes, among them Avenida El Poblado from Premium Plaza to La Frontera, the ring around the Atanasio Girardot sports complex, Autopista Sur along the river, Cerro El Volador and the 16 km climb up Las Palmas, most of them open from 7 AM to 1 PM. INDER counted around 25,000 users a week in 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Ciclovía open?

On Sundays and public holidays. INDER's schedule gives 7 AM to 1 PM for the Estadio, Avenida del Río and El Poblado routes, 7 AM to 12 noon for Cerro El Volador, and 5:30 to 10 AM for Las Palmas.

Which roads does it use?

The five main daytime routes are Estadio (the outer ring of the Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot, 3.1 km), Avenida del Río (Autopista Sur from Solla to Colcafé, 12.8 km), El Poblado (Avenida El Poblado from Premium Plaza to La Frontera, 5.3 km), Cerro El Volador (from the hill's entrance to the ring road at the top, 2.6 km) and Las Palmas (from the San Diego roundabout to the Viva Palmas mall, 16 km). INDER also runs short neighbourhood routes.

Is there a Ciclovía at night?

Yes, on Tuesdays and Thursdays: the inner ring of the Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot from 7 to 9 PM (1.8 km), and Autopista Sur from the Madre Laura bridge to Colcafé from 8 to 10 PM (9.7 km). INDER recommends reflective clothing at night.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, as long as you walk with it and keep its collar on at all times. Motorised vehicles of any kind are not allowed, and INDER asks riders and skaters to wear safety gear such as a helmet and knee and elbow pads.

Does it ever close?

Yes, for some events. On 6 September 2026, for example, the El Poblado and Estadio routes did not run because of the Medellín Marathon, and in May 2026 the Ciclovía was suspended for election day. INDER asks people to check its channels before setting out.
