The Jardín Botánico de Medellín, named after the Antioquian naturalist Joaquín Antonio Uribe, is a 13.2-hectare garden in the north of the city, opened in 1972. It keeps more than 5,000 plants of around 1,200 species, some of them threatened, and calls itself a living science museum. Entry is free, and it sits steps from Universidad Metro station on Metro Line A.

Getting there

By Car

The garden has its own car park, with 105 car spaces, 72 motorbike spaces and 2 accessible spaces. Cars pay COP 4,100 per hour or part hour, up to COP 20,000 for the day (12 hours); motorbikes pay COP 1,300 per hour, up to COP 10,000. The garden also mentions a small public car park for 120 vehicles on Carrera 52 (Carabobo).

By Public Transport

Take Metro Line A to Universidad station, which connects directly to one of the garden's entrances, about 100 m away in a straight line. Pedestrians enter and leave through the Access Building, a few steps from the station. There is bicycle parking for COP 1,000 a day, paid at the ticket office.

By Taxi / Rideshare

Taxis can drop off near the pedestrian entrance at Carrera 52 and Calle 73. Uber, DiDi and InDrive also operate in Medellín.

What are the Jardín Botánico's opening hours?

Tuesday to Friday 9:30 to 16:00; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 9:00 to 16:00. It is closed on Mondays; when a Monday is a public holiday it opens and closes on the Tuesday instead. Some dates close for private and city events, and the garden publishes them on its website.

Is entry free?

Yes, entry to the garden is free except during special events. Two attractions charge: the Butterfly House (COP 10,000) and the Prehistoric Plants Trail (COP 6,000).

Yes, free ones led by the garden's environmental educators: Tuesday at 11:00, Thursday at 14:00, and weekends and public holidays at 11:00 and 14:00. Meet at the Sala de Lectura y Cultura; no registration is needed.

No. Pets are not allowed, except companion animals certified by a doctor or psychologist.
